Mango popping out
I started the project off by buying a delicious mango from the local supermarket and eating the mango flesh. The remaining mango seed or more correctly the outer husk of the seed pod looked shrivelled and unfertile but I decided to go ahead and try it out anyway.
I scrubbed the husk and let it dry out for a few days. Then I cracked open the husk with a sharp knife and removed the inner seed. The seed also looked a little dry and lifeless but again I continued anyway 🙂
The seed was then wrapped in a few layers of paper towel and dampened with a spray bottle. This damp mass was then inserted into an inflated plastic bag, sealed and placed in a warm, dry, dark, cupboard in the kitchen.
After a few weeks I removed the seed and it had begun to sprout!!
Here are the first signs of life from the mango seed.
